Dec 22, 2021 · These use a now obsolete format called mSATA -- there are still some for sale, but the interface is dead as far as newer systems. Most mSATA drives are either 512G or smaller, or they're from no-name suppliers. Samsung did at one point make a 1T mSATA SSD, though.
Use a simple mSATA to SATA adapter such as this. You can mount 2.5" sized adapters in a desktop without issue normally. You don't need to put it into a 3.5" mount, just that simple adapter. I've mounted 2.5" laptop drives into desktop cabinets in a pinch without any issue.

May 16, 2022 · mSATA was mainly for miniaturization of SSDs for laptops. Yes, you can use a 512gb unit. Soon after, M.2/PCIe/NVMe was ratified. Small, but additionally 5 times faster. No use trying to fit a mSATA into a desktop now-days. mSATA and normal SATA-3/600 are the same speed. I suggest you get yourself a name-brand 2.5-inch 512gb SATA SSD.

That means laptops tend to be very proprietary which means very often, add-on parts are very limited, expensive, and often MUST come from the laptop maker.
